ARTIST STATEMENT

Stories are what shape an individual – stories give a person an identity.  First and foremost, I am a storyteller.  From that perspective, if I am telling a story, then I must believe in it. I must believe in my characters.  I must believe in myself.  The stories I formulate are thus the product of identity – how I tell a story is always based on the perspective of a person.  The focus is that person; that “character” – The protagonist.  Even if that person isn’t necessarily a “good” person, they have a story to empathize with.

\\

Frequently, the stories I tell follow a non-linear formula that shift between the past, present and the future.  I like to challenge the viewer with the notion that every part of a person’s life is significant.  That’s why the past can easily be a benefit that propels a character to shape his/her future in a positive way or a curse that prohibits a character from moving forward in a productive manner.

Characters frequently represent the cycle of life and in that cycle, people make monumental changes that set them on a path. However, people make mistakes on their journey and thus, second chances are crucial to living and shaping destiny.  I’ve lived a life where I’ve called upon second chances in order to set me straight and give me a path to follow. That’s why redemption is recurring theme in my works.  Characters stumble, lose their way, but they are not lost. They get their second chance to make things right.  Even if their second chance is used for destructive purposes, they still got a chance to use that opportunity to change their life.

The will to stand up after being knocked down when all strength seems to have faded informs the personality of my work.  I admire the heroics of people who overcome extreme adversity through physical perseverance and thus action and violence informs the majority of my work.
